Further Thoughts on Síomón Solomon's 'The Atonement of Lesley Ann'

Síomón Solomon's The Atonement of Lesley Ann (2020) - a theatrical ghost-cum-love story (based on actual events) - continues to haunt my imagination; particularly the use of the religious term atonment in its title ...
 
One wonders what Solomon has in mind by his use of this concept and why, for example, he didn't simply call his play the killing of Lesley Ann? 
 
For in what way is Lesley Ann atoned? And for what does she need to be atoned? Is Solomon suggesting that she is in some manner complicit in her own abduction and murder (that no one is innocent after all)? 
 
That would certainly be a provocative and unsettling suggestion. But then the whole idea of atonement via a sacrificial offering - be it Christ on the Cross or a child on the Moors - is deeply disturbing, is it not? 
 
Because we know who it is who is washed clean by the spilt blood and forgiven their sins - who it is taking a step on the path towards redemption and, ultimately, not just fellowship but reunification with God [1] - and it isn't the victim; it is, rather, the one who wields the knife ... 
 
 
II. 
 
In other words, it's Ian Brady and Myra Hindley who, via a terrible act of faith, are atoned by the sacrifice of poor Lesley Ann [2].    
 
Again, it's quite shocking to be reminded that the road to salvation can begin in an act of violence and even the practice of evil. But then, of course, the inventor of this whole mad system is a cruel and vengeful God who not only demands sacrifice be made unto him, but is prepared to see even his own son scourged and crucified. 
 
Ultimately, Solomon isn't attempting to exonerate Brady and Hindley, nor excuse their appalling crimes. By incorporating a transcript of the recording made of ten-year-old Downey begging for her young life into the play he reminds us of the facts of the case in all their horror. 
 
What he is doing, rather, is exploring the scandalous logic of Christian morality which offers the possibility of redemption to even the most depraved of individuals.
 
 
Notes
 
[1] Atonement means unity or reconciliation between man and God; a coming back into ontotheological wholness (literally at-one-ment). We might note also that the word atonement is often the English translation given for the Hebrew term kaphar [כָּפַר], which means to cover - thus atonement might also be defined as the covering over of sin, or, indeed, the covering up of crime; a form of concealment with which God himself is complicit.     

[2] Unless they have committed what is known within theological circles as the eternal or unpardonable sin and can thus never make amends or receive forgiveness. However, that isn't something - as far as I remember - indicated in Solomon's play.

Additional Thoughts on Síomón Solomon's 'The Atonement of Lesley Ann'

I.
 
Síomón Solomon's The Atonement of Lesley Ann (2020) - a theatrical ghost-cum-love story (based on actual events) - continues to haunt my imagination ... [1]
 
After reading and re-reading the script (kindly given to me by the author) over the Christmas and New Year period, it has suddenly triggered thoughts of Stockhausen's seminal work Gesang der Jünglinge (1955-56) [2], which, like Solomon's play, features the voice of a child which it seamlessly integrates with electronic sounds, creating a new (and rather terrifying) listening experience.  

It's possible that Solomon was hoping to create something similar with his use of music and audio effects including police sirens, radio static, and the howling wind of Saddleworth Moor. However, without attending a performance of the work one cannot say how successful he is in this. 
 
 
II.      
 
Gesang der Jünglinge is based on mytho-biblical events described in the Book of Daniel [3], wherein the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar throws three young Jews - Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego [4] - into a super-heated furnace after they refuse to bow down to a giant golden statue made in his image. 
 
Miraculously, they are unharmed and are heard singing praises to God who has sent an angel to protect them from the flames, transforming their intense heat into a cool dawn breeze [5]. Naturally astounded by what he has witnessed, Nebuchadnezzar commands his people to henceforth worship Yahweh, God of the Jews, and he appoints the three holy youths to high office. 
 
 
III.
 
According to Michel Tournier, it was Gesang der Jünglinge that he repeatedly listened to whilst writing Le Roi des aulnes (1970) [6] - not Schubert's Erlkönig (1815) as many might imagine - and he explains that his novel and Stockhausen's composition share a similar terrible logic that requires the sacrifice (or murder) of small children and the presence of an ogre ...
 
If you listen to Gesang der Jünglinge, says Tournier, what is most striking is that only pre-pubescent voices can be heard and that the joyful and triumphant end of the Bible story is of no interest whatsoever to Stockhausen:  
 
"He keeps only the sound of crystalline voices rising out of the torture of the flames. Bodies tortured in the fire are represented by voices tortured in a thousand ways by sophisticated electronic devices. Voices? In fact there is only one voice, electronically multiplied by repeated recording overdubbed upon itself; the child sings in chorus with himself. Children, torture from which there is no escape, a single voice overdubbed upon itself - in all these ways Stockhausen's piece resembles The Erl-King." [7]   
 
And in these ways also both the above works feel strangely present in The Atonement of Lesley Ann ...

It is generally accepted amongst modern scholars that the Book of Daniel originated as a collection of stories among the Jewish community in Babylon and Mesopotamia in the Persian and early Hellenistic periods (5th to 3rd centuries BCE), expanded by the visions of chapters 7-12 in the Maccabean era (mid-2nd century). It is also agreed that Daniel is a legendary rather than a purely historical figure.   
 
[4] These are the Babylonian (or Chaldean) names that the three Jewish children were given; their original Hebrew names were Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 
 
[5] In Christian interpretations of this story, the angel is in fact Jesus and he is depicted in icongraphy with a cross upon his halo. The story thus has great significance for members of the Christian faith.

On Things That Go Bump in the Theatrical Night

Ghosts have been an integral part of drama since ancient Greece and, arguably, the theatre itself is an inherently uncanny space; one that evokes all kinds of feelings, memories, and spirits, etc. 
 
So I was pleased to see that Irish playwright Síomón Solomon made a spectral figure central to his work The Atonement of Lesley Ann, which premiered on February 15th at the Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin, as part of the Scene and Heard Festival (2020), directed by Larissa Brigatti and starring the young actress Misha Fitzgibbon [1].      
 
Of course, there are critics and theatregoers who roll their eyes whenever a ghost appears on stage and feel that supernatural elements detract from the seriousness and realism of a work. Indeed, for such people, there is the danger also that otherworldly apparitions unintentionally give rise to comedy and cause sniggering rather than induce terror.       

Others just find ghosts on stage old-fashioned; it reminds them too much of Victorian theatre which developed much of the technical trickery still used to scare us, such as the phantasmagoria, for example; "a spooky magic lantern show in which images of the dead, projected onto smoke, loomed menacingly over the spectators. To make the effect even more chilling, the audience sat in the dark for the first time ever in the British theatre, the spectres floating out of the black towards them." [2]
 
But, as I say, I was glad to see Solomon - whose interest in and knowledge of all things that go bump in the night is extensive - have the courage to write the work he wanted to write and ignore those who told him to reconsider (i.e. abandon) the more occult elements and root the play firmly in the real world. 
 
Such critical advice may be well-intentioned - it may even be very sensible - but, in my view, it entirely misses the point of what Solomon is attempting to do in this genre-defying and daringly experimental work. Sure, he could exorcise the ghost and remove the poetry and, yes, that would simplify things; but sometimes less is not more, it is simply less (as in less imaginative, less, intelligent, and less interesting).
       
My hope is that The Atonement of Lesley Ann will one day receive the full-production, wide audience, and critical acclaim that it deserves.

[1] It might be noted that, although young, Miss Fitzgibbon was - against the author's own wishes - significantly older than the murdered ten-year-old whose terrible case the work is based on. Whilst I understand there are issues surrounding the casting of minors in works that deal with adult themes, by not using a child in the lead it's undeniable that some of the shock value and horror of the story is lessened.
